Q.
Our Board is not a "Money Board," how do we attract leaders
who can give and get?
A. Many organizations struggle
with how to attract and retain leadership who have the capacity to give
and the willingness to engage others to do likewise. Once you have determined
exactly what you need in skills and experiences, then:
- identify prospective new board members who meet the criteria for
which you are searching-hint: start looking at your donors and funders
- assign someone in the organization to develop the relationship with
these prospective new board members
- invite them to participate in some project as a member of a committee
- help them understand expectations of board members
When it is time to do the actual recruitment,
then the president and organization's executive director should meet
with the prospect face-to-face. The meeting, and its content, should
not be a surprise...
And above all you should ask.
