  • Executive Director

    Mersky, Jaffe & Associates, a national executive search and consulting firm, has been engaged to conduct a search for an Executive Director for the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Indianapolis.

    The Bureau of Jewish Education is the primary resource of Jewish education for all age levels and groups within the community and beyond.  The Bureau was founded in 1910 with a dream held by community leaders and its founder, Rabbi I.E. Neustadt. Their innovation was to establish a communal, co-educational Hebrew School. Today, as the second-oldest Hebrew School in the United States, housed in the Smulyan-Stolkin Education Center, the Bureau continues to follow the original ideas of our founders.  In addition to the community Hebrew School, the Bureau operates a rich program, including:

    • Adult Education offerings
    • B’nai Mitzvah tutoring
    • Early childhood and pre-school education
    • Hebrew High School
    • Holocaust education
    • Library and resource center
    • Professional development for the entire Jewish education community
    • Youth and family education programs

    Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership to the Bureau of Jewish Education, directs its activities, oversees its operations, and has primary responsibility for the BJE’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.  The Executive Director serves as the primary liaison on behalf of the Bureau with the other agencies of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis and throughout the community.

    In addition, the Executive Director:

    • plans, monitors, evaluates and provides administrative oversight on all Bureau operations and programs.  In consultation with the Board, the Executive director sets the direction, strategies, and priorities of the Bureau.  Recruits, directs, evaluates and advises professional staff on a day-to-day basis.
    • directly coordinates and oversees the afternoon Hebrew and Hebrew High School programs and, as such, recruits, directs, evaluates and advises faculty on a day-to-day basis as well as serves as the programs’ liaison and principal point of contact with students, parents and the schools’ communal stakeholders.
    • develops the agency budget and monitors performance in conjunction with the Business Manager.
    • serves as advocate and spokesperson for Jewish Education and for the Bureau in the Jewish community and the community at large.
    • builds support for as well as motivates and educates lay leadership about Jewish education.
    • attends and participates in Federation Board meetings as the Bureau professional.
    • directs development, marketing and fundraising initiatives including grant funding for BJE programs and initiatives.

    The successful candidate will be:

    • a senior, experienced leader with graduate degree(s) in education, educational administration and/or Jewish studies who demonstrates a mastery of Hebrew language;
    • a thoughtful planner who will set, promote, and oversee a strong vision at the Bureau as well as model by deed and word the agency’s values and vision;
    • a professional with a proven track record in Jewish education, with at least ten years of hands-on classroom experience and/or five years of administrative and supervisory experience, as well as a demonstrated capacity to work with high level volunteers and philanthropists and foster a positive student, parent, faculty and community culture;
    • a strong manager who is a self-starter who listens and is able to build a motivated team of volunteers and professionals;
    • a hands-on leader with superior verbal and written communication skills as well as extraordinary intrapersonal skills; and
    • a creative, energetic individual committed to realizing the potential of the bold, innovative and dynamic vision of the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Indianapolis.

    If you, or anyone you know, might be a suitable candidate for this unique position, please forward the person’s name, cover letter, resume and contact information to David A. Mersky at david@merskyjaffe.com.
